Utah’s NHL Franchise Officially Named the Utah Mammoth

Team introduces permanent brand identity including colors, logos, and jersey designs

Utah Mammoth name chosen by fans following a 13-month process with four rounds of fan voting and more than 850,000 votes

First run of Utah Mammoth merchandise goes on sale in person today at 12 P.M. MT; online purchases to begin May 14

SALT LAKE CITY (May 7, 2025) – Today, Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) revealed the new name and permanent identity of Utah’s NHL franchise: the Utah Mammoth. More than 10,000 years ago, herds of mammoth claimed Utah as their home and, ever since, the mammoth has embodied strength, momentum, and an earth-shaking presence – qualities that are brought to life by the passion of Utah’s hockey fans and that mirror the franchise’s bold emergence into the NHL. In a process driven by the community, the Utah Mammoth name was chosen by fans during a 13-month process involving four rounds of fan voting and more than 850,000 votes.

“We couldn’t be more excited to launch the official name and marks for Utah’s NHL hockey team. When it came to naming the team, we did something unprecedented – going through four rounds of community voting, including getting feedback not only on potential names but also on potential logos. We love the passion of the people of Utah and the way they showed up for the team during its inaugural season and the energy they brought to voting on its permanent identity,” said Ryan and Ashley Smith, owners of the Utah Mammoth. “From day one, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah, and we are excited to celebrate today’s launch with the entire state. The community chose the Utah Mammoth, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from, and the unstoppable force we’re building together.”

Mammoth fossils have been found throughout Utah in Bear Lake, Fillmore, Orem, Park City, Lake Powell, and most notably Huntington Canyon, where a complete mammoth skeleton was discovered in 1988. These massive, resilient creatures stood over 14 feet tall, weighed up to 22,000 pounds, and used their curved tusks to dig through snow, fend off predators, and thrive in Utah’s glacial terrain. Evidence suggests mammoths charged in herds at speeds exceeding 25 miles per hour, comparable to the speeds reached by the fastest skaters in the NHL.

As part of today’s announcement, SEG introduced a full suite of brand elements including the primary logo for the franchise – the Mountain Mammoth – along with secondary marks and the Utah Badge:

  • The Mountain Mammoth logo captures the fierce power of the mammoth mid-charge, tusks up, and ready to attack. Within the mark are nods to the state including the Wasatch Mountain Range and snow-capped peaks that form the beast’s crown; the shape of Utah, which is subtly embedded in the mountain silhouette; and the curved tusk to form a bold “U.”

  • The secondary marks underscore the team’s identity and unwavering pride in the state and include the word “UTAH” with the Mammoth tusk embedded into the “U,” as well as the tusked “U” standing alone as a bold lettermark.

  • The Utah Badge is a classic emblem inspired by the UTAH stairstep design from the franchise’s inaugural season – paying homage to the history of hockey in the state and showcasing the club’s commitment to continuing to grow the game.

Accompanying the visual identity is a unique custom-designed typeface, Mammoth Sans, which features a 10-degree forward slant that mirrors Utah’s mountainous terrain and reflects the team’s relentless pursuit of progress. Details like the angled crossbars on the “A” and “H” serve as another visual link to the team’s inaugural lettering system and the steepness of Utah’s highest peaks.

The organization’s inaugural season color palette will remain at the center of the team’s permanent identity. The colors consist of Rock Black, representing the darkness of night in the mountains; Salt White, illustrating both the snow on Utah’s peaks and the famous salt flats; and Mountain Blue, a representation of Utah’s rich winter sports history and its clear skies for more than 230 days a year.

The team’s uniforms will retain the same striping design fans have come to love, now updated with Mammoth marks. The home jersey remains Rock Black, anchored by the Mountain Mammoth primary logo on the chest and Utah Badge on the shoulders. The away jersey continues in Salt White, featuring the inaugural season UTAH stairstep design with an updated typeface across the front and the Mountain Mammoth primary logo on each shoulder. Player numbers will be styled in the Mammoth Sans font, and “Est. 2024” will be stitched inside the collar of both jerseys – a tribute to the NHL’s arrival in Utah.

The team’s permanent brand identity was developed in collaboration with renowned design firm Doubleday & Cartwright.

Beginning today at 12 P.M. MT, fans can purchase a limited selection of first-run Utah Mammoth merchandise, including t-shirts, hats, and hoodies, exclusively at the Team Store inside Delta Center. Fans can also express their interest in being among the first to purchase a Utah Mammoth home jersey by filling out this form. Starting next week on May 14, items will be available for purchase online at www.NHLShop.com.

In the coming weeks, the Utah Mammoth will be announcing details surrounding a series of merchandise drops and community events happening across the state this summer, with the first taking place May 17 at the ice rinks at the SLC Sports Complex in Salt Lake City.

A press kit including visual assets is available here. Leading up to the 2025-26 NHL season, fans can engage with the team via its new microsite, www.TusksUp.com, X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok, and are encouraged to join in the conversations using #TusksUp.

SEG established Utah’s NHL franchise in April 2024, and it was known as Utah Hockey Club for the inaugural 2024-25 season.

SALT LAKE CITY (April 30, 2025) – Today, Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) announced that it has begun the much-anticipated, multi-phase process to transform Delta Center into a state-of-the-art, dual-sport venue and anchor Utah’s NBA and NHL franchises in downtown Salt Lake City. The transformation includes the implementation of a revolutionary seating system that maintains close-to-the-action seating for Jazz fans and affords full views from every lower bowl seat for NHL games – preserving Delta Center’s famous game-night atmosphere while bolstering its reputation as the premier destination for concerts and entertainment in the region. Upon ultimate completion, the building itself will debut a new main entrance and outdoor plaza that provides a vibrant experience for ticket holders and downtown visitors alike.

Delta Center was originally built in 1991 as the home of the Utah Jazz, underwent a significant top-to-bottom renovation in 2017, and was modified again in 2024 to accommodate Utah’s new NHL team. The multi-year transformation that begins now will be the arena’s most extensive and innovative inside-out effort yet, centered on changing the geometry of the arena bowl to optimize hockey sightlines and enhance the overall experience.

“Adding an ice rink inside an existing basketball arena is an unthinkable feat given that an ice rink is nearly double the size of a basketball court. We are excited for the challenge as we kick off this never-before-done renovation project. This transformation will create the most compelling, welcoming, and exciting experience for hockey fans, while also allowing us to maintain the steep vertical seating for basketball that has made Delta Center such a dynamic venue with its loud atmosphere that energizes our players night after night,” said Ryan and Ashley Smith, co-founders of Smith Entertainment Group and owners of Delta Center. “By taking such significant steps to transform Delta Center into a world-class facility for both professional basketball and hockey, the Jazz and Utah’s NHL team will become anchors of downtown Salt Lake City for decades to come. And fans will be further immersed in the game night experience both inside and outside the arena as we work to reimagine the downtown experience of Utah’s capital city. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the 2025-26 seasons.”

SUMMER 2025 RENOVATION PLANS

Implementing an Innovative Riser System in the Lower Bowl

While most arenas that host basketball and hockey are designed to be hockey-first – which puts greater distance between basketball fans and the court – SEG is doing something that has never been done before in a dual-use basketball and hockey arena by creating the first-and-only retractable seating system that accommodates a nearly 12-foot variance in elevation between rink and court endlines to offer optimal sightlines for both the NBA and NHL. The innovative new system will keep the incredible viewing experience for Jazz fans that they have come to love while optimizing sightlines for NHL fans, with every seat in the lower bowl set to have a complete view of the ice at the start of the 2025-26 season. The new hockey configuration also adds capacity behind the goals and above and around the event tunnels on the north and south side of the lower bowl and improves access to seating behind the boards.

For basketball, the riser system will consist of 29 rows of retractable seats that extend over 28 feet from the Level 3 concourse down to the court behind each baseline – all designed to ensure the arena maintains its steep slope that will continue to put Jazz fans in incredibly close proximity to the court.

When all renovations are complete, seating capacity for hockey will increase from 11,131 to approximately 17,000 – with every seat in the upper and lower bowls having full views of both goals – and capacity for basketball will increase from 18,206 to nearly 19,000 seats.

SEG contracted with Michigan-based StageRight for this unique and innovative retractable seating system.

Elongating the Bowl and Raising Its Floor

To make room for the new riser system and the installation of a new ice floor slab, SEG is lengthening the arena bowl by approximately 12 feet at each end and raising the floor two feet. These changes will improve sightlines along the sidelines, in the corners, and throughout the upper and lower bowl, and set the stage for future upper bowl renovations.

Other Infrastructure Updates

Several other modifications taking place in 2025 are aimed at updating building infrastructure and creating new opportunities for entertainment. In addition to new premium spaces on Level 1, the restroom capacity at Delta Center will increase by 12%, and four new dehumidifiers will be installed to maintain excellent ice conditions in the arena at all times. This summer, SEG will also begin to construct a 450-stall parking structure, designed by Walter P. Moore, that will be completed in a future phase of construction.

LOOKING AHEAD

Major interior and exterior construction will continue during future NBA and NHL offseasons. Plans include adding an east-facing main entrance and plaza that will serve as a gateway to the heart of downtown; redesigning the existing plaza and concourses; and remodeling upper bowl seating to improve sightlines.

BUILDING ON 2024 ARENA UPGRADES

To accommodate Utah’s NHL team, SEG made initial updates to Delta Center in Summer 2024. These included adding a new home NHL locker room and team workout and treatment facilities, new visiting team locker rooms for the NBA and NHL, additional spaces for coaches and rooms for league officials, and a tunnel pathway adjacent to home and away team locker rooms that provide access to their respective benches. The Utah Jazz locker room was also redesigned. Inside the bowl, a new lighting system was installed to add vibrancy and enhance views for hockey, and broadcast platforms were expanded to make room for hockey cameras. The flagship Team Store located inside the main entrance nearly doubled in size, and several courtside suites were renovated.

REIMAGINING DOWNTOWN SALT LAKE CITY

The onset of Delta Center renovations also marks the official beginning of a large-scale effort to reimagine downtown Salt Lake City through the creation of a world-class sports, entertainment, culture, and convention district. The multi-block development will reconnect the east and west sides of the city’s downtown core, from Delta Center to the Salt Palace Convention Center. The new development is anticipated to increase visitation, bolster existing cultural assets, and create a more activated, connected, and family-friendly year-round downtown experience for decades to come.

SEG brought on three world-renowned groups to help drive the Delta Center transformation project: Utah-based Okland Construction is the general contractor; SCI Architects is the lead design firm; and CAA Icon serves as a strategic advisor.

SEG Foundation to Showcase and Support Local Utah Artists by Hosting En Plein Air, Live Painting Exhibits and Pop-Up Art Gallery at Delta Center

Sixteen local artists to bring Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club game-day energy to life with live painting displays on March 19 and 20

Utahns invited to attend a free, open-to-the-public pop-up gallery

at Delta Center on March 26 when they can browse the En Plein Air artwork and dozens of other pieces

Donation to Bad Dog Arts provides opportunities for aspiring youth artists

SALT LAKE CITY (March 17, 2025) – Today, the SEG Foundation announced its plans to support local artists and Utah’s community of art enthusiasts by hosting a number of initiatives at Delta Center over the next 10 days. On March 19 and 20, En Plein Air live painting events will be held at Delta Center, showcasing 16 artists (eight each evening) as they create exclusive, one-of-a-kind works inspired by the Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club. On March 26, all Utahns are welcomed to a free-to-attend, open-to-the-public pop-up gallery exhibition at the arena, when the artists will display the results of their live work, along with a variety of other pieces from their respective collections. These activations are being held in partnership with The Blocks Art District – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established by Salt Lake City and County leaders to champion arts and culture in the downtown area.

Derived from the French phrase “in the open air,” En Plein Air is a painting technique that captures the essence of a scene in real time, outside the confines of a studio. The first live painting event will take place on March 19 as the Utah Jazz take on the Washington Wizards. During the game, eight (8) local artists will be stationed throughout Delta Center, transforming the arena’s energy and atmosphere into stunning works of art – live and in the moment. The next evening on March 20, eight (8) additional artists will create their original pieces as Utah Hockey Club faces off against the Buffalo Sabres.

Following the live painting events, the SEG Foundation, in collaboration with the participating artists, will host a free-and-open-to-the-public En Plein Air Pop-Up Art Gallery at Delta Center on March 26 from 6 to 8 P.M. The one-night event will showcase the vibrant pieces created during the Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club games, along with additional works from each featured artist. Attendees will have the opportunity to view and purchase the unique pieces created during the games, as well as other items on display. Any unsold artwork created during the En Plein Air events will be auctioned off. All proceeds from the sale and auction will go directly to the artists.

In addition to the events held in partnership with The Blocks Art District, Ashley Smith, co-founder of Smith Entertainment Group, will surprise 4th and 5th graders participating in Salt Lake City School Districts Learning Lab afterschool art program on March 25. As part of its commitment to fostering creativity in youth, the SEG Foundation will also make a donation to Bad Dog Arts, a local program designed to inspire kids, teens, and adults through the creative arts. These funds will support summer camps and clinics for youth within the program, providing opportunities for young artists to develop their skills and creativity.
